Overview

Knowledge about Professional Identity in Correctional Nursing is emerging and offers a view of what it means to be a Correctional Nurse in a way that impacts the clinical workforce.  This presentation provides an introduction to this professionally grounding topic and the developing evidence for our specialty.  This topic is presented by Dr. Deborah Shelton, co-founder for the Center for Correctional Nursing and the American Correctional Nurses Association, and is the Chair for ACNA's Awards, Scholarships and Research Committee.  She is also Program Director for NCCHC Nurse Accreditation Program and Chairs the Nurse Advisory Council.

Learning Objectives

  1. Increase their understanding of Professional Identity in Nursing through a review of the ISPIN Framework for Professional Identity in Nursing.
  2. Map the historical frequency and evolution of Professional Identity in Correctional Nursing.
  3. Assess the significance of PIN for nurses in correctional settings.
